Future oriented and environmentally friendly
The Birki shoe company is a modern enterprise that values the positive properties of
traditional materials used in shoe manufacturing. At the same time, however, it is very
open-minded with its approach to progressive new alternatives. For us, traditional means such
renowned materials as felt along with high quality cork latex and jute, all of which are used
in our original BIRKENSTOCK footbed production.
But on endeavours to offer a large variety of products also necessitate research of modern material.
After lengthy and extensive testing we have added the new upper material Birko-Flor into our range of
materials along with Alpro-Cell sandals moulded in a single step as well as - new this season - stretch
material. Last but not least we are convinced of the extraordinary properties of the
environmentally-friendly Alpro-Foam, which we use in our footbed production.
We really do take our responsibility towards the environment very seriously and while looking for more
environmentally-friendly ways of manufacturing we have developed a new production process - direct
moulding -which allows us to manufacture without the use of adhesives. With this technique we have
revolutionized traditional production methods, because uppers and footbeds are attached to each other
in a single step and thus form an inseparable unit.
Our direct moulded styles which use the upper materials Birko-Flor and Birko-Felt offer unparalleled
durability. This longevity is right in line with our environmentally-friendly mandate. Only
longlasting high quality materials can prevent shoes from being disposed of prematurely thus keeping
waste down and the environment protected.
Birki's are and remain products "made in Germany", because we want to ensure environmentally-friendly
production processes in the years to come and also maintain our high quality standars.
